OK, there have been a bunch of these "starter tutorials" already posted, and I will be borrowing from most of them (I won't be quoting - people whom I'm "borrowing" from, thanx in advance, but I can't remember where I read everything )
___________________________
So you've started off as a level 1 Dark Knight, and you're sitting in town in Lorencia. What do you do? Well, first off, you open your inventory (click "I") and equip your little axe...
That's all you've got (don't worry, you'll eventually have so many items, you'll be GIVING them away wholesale!), so time to close that window before you get depressed
Time to go hunting monsters! Now, the layout of Lorencia is a bit confusing... there are 4 gates to the town, (top, right, bottom, and left), but for some unknown reason, "North" is to the Left! So when I say go out the South gate... I mean the right one You'll probably see others calling it the East gate... they should be right, of course... it's just the screwball directions Webzen has implemented.
So, you're going out the South gate. After about 2 seconds, you'll notice a peddler (he's just "south" of the gate). He's selling leather armour, and potions. You can't afford anything now, but later, you'll be buying apples (the cheapest healing potion) and leather from him.
Now, walk about a bit, you should see 2 types of monsters, spiders and budge dragons. STAY AWAY from the budge dragons! They're too tough for you right now, and will be for a couple more levels. Concentrate on the spiders. After you've killed about 20 spiders, you should see your level rise to 2.
CONGRATULATIONS!! You're now a level 2 DK. Find a spot without any monsters (or go to town if necessary), and click "C". Add all 5 points to strength. For the next several levels, you will almost exclusively be adding to strength. Keep doing so until you meet the requirements for all of the leather items the peddler sells (level 4 for everything except armour, level 5 for the armour - needs 44 strength).
By level 5, you should now have a bit of gold, and have found a few small shield/leather or weapons (drops are random, but you will probably get something every 10-20 spiders you kill).
You can now take out budge dragons, and can start thinking about bull warriors. Depending on the equipment you wish to use, raise your stats accordingly (a kris will take agility, while armours/shields will take strength) until you can use a decent set of bronze armour (but don't buy any unless it's REALLY cheap).
NEVER add any stats to vitality or energy! You get 2 HP per level, and your skill does double-damage already. It'll take WAY too many levels of pure energy to make any real difference there, don't even think of adding to it until level 70 or higher (at level 80, you can use a really cool skill "Twisting Slash", which MAY cause you to want more energy).
Continue leveling up by following the map clockwise. Once the Western monsters are too easy, move on to the North, then move onto the East.
In the far Northwest, there is a portal to Davias, as well as Giants. Don't fight the giants until you can take out the liches in the East (OK, so it's not QUITE clockwise!), but you should be able to take out elite bulls/hounds before liches (liches are a pain - they have a range attack, and the skeletons are tougher than giants, so actually, many people just give the east a complete miss and move on to the giants after elite bulls.
There is another Peddler in the Northeast (he's kind of hidden, you have to cross some water), who sells some fairly decent stuff (better than Armourer in town, and peddler in South). If you can afford it, and don't get any better offers in the marketplace in town, buy some armour/weapons.
Once you're level 15, you have options. By far the easiest way to gain levels is to go to Davias (the other option is to continue soloing giants, but that gets boring after awhile - and you'll be back to soloing soon enough!). Take the portal in the Northwest (avoid the giants if you still can't beat them) and you'll be in a new town.
At first, I strongly suggest carrying a scroll of Town Portal, as it's easy to get lost, and EVERY monster in Davias can kill you very quickly! Carry lots of potions as well...
You start in the town (if you didn't, then probably nobody would make it to Davias until level 25 at least!), so go over to the gate (there'll be plenty of people at it) and say "Level 15 looking for party".
Within a couple minutes, maximum, you should be invited into a party. The leader will probably tell you that you can have all gold/items (if the party has more than 2 people, you'll have to share with the other low-levels - first to grab it, gets it!), but h/she gets all the jewels. Agree to that (although jewels are nice, they rarely drop, and you need the cash, items, and fast XP just as much, if not more), and follow the leader...
They will almost certainly be off to kill Elite Yetis. These beasts have 4 arms and can kill you in 2 hits... so don't attack them! You will now spend the next 15 levels or so avoiding the monsters and getting "free" XP and picking up gold. The first few times, you'll probably die every so often, as lag or over exuberance gets you cornered by yetis... Be sure to click "P" and check out the coordinates of your leader, then go back out and meet him (don't stop for anything, as even worms can take you out quickly!).
Do NOT think of yourself as a leech during this phase of your leveling!! When you are added to the party, the XP value grows (a yeti once worth 500XP can go up to 800XP), and the high-level player gets most of it (you'll get around 100, but they kill yetis FAR faster than you kill giants). Plus, they are in no danger (Elite Yetis probably do no damage to them - or minimal at best) while you are risking your life to accompany them!
As for adding to your stats... Get your agility to about 80 (u want to use a blade) and add the rest to strength. By the time you reach level 30 or so, you should have amassed a substantial amount of cash, as well as some pretty decent items. You can probably get yourself a decent scale set (+2+8 or better), and a decent shield +option (Plate Shield+1+15 is selling for about 75k as of the writing of this tutorial).
Once you hit level 30, you'll probably find it's getting harder and harder to find parties. You no longer add very much XP, so aren't as desirable to the uber-levels. You can try putting on leather armour and carrying a crappy weapon in the hopes of fooling them, but once they party you, they can see your hit points... and they will be very suspicious of a level 15 DK with 200HP!!
So, once you're done with partying, you once again have options. One is to solo in Davias (you can probably take out worms, maybe hommerds too), but after facing elite yetis for 15 levels, taking out worms can seem like quite the come down.
If you want some variety, try going over to Noria, land of the fairies. To get there, go back to Lorencia, and go to the Southeast corner (top-right). You should see a gate that leads to Noria. You can use this portal as soon as level 10, but I'd only suggest it around now, as before, it's just another world to get used to with little extra benefits other than variety.
You start in Noria in the Northwest (bottom-right). To get to town, follow the road (it goes left, then up, then left again, if memory serves). If you get hopelessly lost (I did the first few times), just use a town portal, or ask someone (sometimes people are nice, but they often get suspicious when a level 30 character asks them where to go (they'll probably be elves under level 10, so might think you're scamming them).
You'll find the Chaos-Goblin in Noria (don't worry about him, you can't make Chaos Dragon Axes yet, and you won't be able to use them for awhile anyways), as well as a peddler who sells potions. You won't find any other DK items for sale here (except by other players), as this is Elf-Town (Elf characters start here, and can't leave until level 10).
The thing to do here is look for a party... but with newbie elves! They will do for you what you did for those uber-characters back in Davias! Say "Looking for Elf level 1-5 for golem party" and you should get a few eager elves flocking to you Party them and head out the south gate (right) to find Stone Golems (they're actually in right and upper right of map, along with agons and forest monsters).
Stone golems should be pretty easy for you to kill by now (they're less powerful than skeletons, but more powerful than giants - level 18), and with your baby elves, you should be getting about 200XP per kill.
The drawback, of course, is that you'll have to give up the gold. Don't be too unhappy... you should have plenty by now, and you can still take the good item drops (you're a DK, so you'll be closer to the golem than the elves), but remember: the elves are doing you a favour! Look at the XP you get when you kill a Stone Golem without them... Do you really want them to leave?
Keep adding to strength during these levels, though I'd strongly suggest getting your agility up to enough to use a Blade+3 or so (90 agility is good). Try to get your defense up to about 190 (you can get Scale +4+8 sets for zen). A dragon slayer shield +x+15 is also a cheap way (100-200k) of getting that defense up, plus helping the dodge rating.
You can continue killing golems for a few more levels, but will eventually notice that you're getting less and less XP. Plus, you don't need any of the drops anymore... By level 40, it's time to pack up and head for the dungeon.
Now, the dungeon is back in Lorencia, out of the east gate (it's a gate that kind of looks like a serpent's head), and you can technically go in at level 20... I strongly suggest NOT going in until you can take out Cyclops.
Make sure you take a town portal scroll, because if you think Noria was confusing, the dungeon is even more so! If you head down and to the left, you can go right by the skeletons and larva (the skeletons are the same ones in Lorencia, and aren't worth your time any more). Eventually, you should see some 1-eyed monsters growling like pigs... that's your quarry!
Cyclops are worth about 250-350 XP, so pick a spot, and start hacking away
With a defense rate of about 190, the cyclops won't really be ably to hurt you (about 5 damage, and you'll get it all back when you kill it). Cyclops also drop some neat stuff (armour, weapons, pendants, JEWELS), and they respawn quickly.
The one flaw is that you'll find a LOT of KSers in the dungeon. Don't get too stubborn holding onto one spot... there's LOTS of cyclops, and you can simply move on to kill others. Towards the exit of D1, there are spots with Cyclops and larva... avoid those, as the larva, though technically easier (lower level, less HP), can poison you, so they're a worse monster to face.

Now, I'm only a level 47 Dark Knight as I'm writing this... so I'm still killing Cyclops... But I can give a loose guideline for the next levels...
Once you get a defense rate of about 200-220, move on to ghosts. They drop lots of scale +4+option, jewels, etc (I partied there briefly and have heard the rest from many players). Ghosts attack quickly, and attack in groups more frequently (I got ganged up on by a bunch, and had to pot several times to survive - and my def is at 195!), so you'll have to be a little more alert than when you're slaughtering cyclops.
Once ghosts aren't profitable, you'll probably be around level 60+. It's time to head back to Davias and kill elite yetis (this time, you're the leader!!). You should be adding mostly to strength, but enough agility to use a really good 2-handed weapon (and to make up for the defense you'll lose when you give up your shield).
You'll need the 2-handed weapon in order to kill quickly, so make sure you own some good armour before you head out for Davias (you should have gotten a few jewels from the ghosts and cyclops). Most of the DK's killing Elite Yetis are wearing Dragon Armour or Plate, and I suggest you do likewise (I intend to be by the time I can get there ).

Useful commands to know:
"I" : Open your inventory
"C" : See your stats, character info
"P" : See your part info (coordinates of party members, hit points, names)
ENTER : To chat
ENTER, then "~" :To talk only to people in your party
ENTER, then TAB, then person's name, then SHIFT+TAB : To private message (PM) someone.
ALT : Displays all items in your field of view. If you click on an item while holding ALT, you can pick it up even if someone else is standing on it (very useful in parties!)
ALT+number : Use a macro (type "/1 Stuff you want to say". When you press ALT+1, you will see "Stuff you want to say")
ALT+Q, W, or E (might be control, can't remember - I'll edit later on) : Assign a different item to those hotkeys (I like to map "W" to Town portal and E to mana, as I never use antidotes).
/party : Type this in the chat menu while selecting a person and they will be given the option to party with you (you have to be next to them, or it won't work)
/trade : Type this in the chat menu while selecting a person and they will be given the option to trade with you (you have to be next to them, or it won't work)
CONTROL+LEFT-CLICK : If you hold down control while clicking on a person (outside of a town), you will attack them (control+right-click will use a skill attack on them).
__________________________
PKing : If you kill someone who didn't attack you first, you will be given a murderer warning and your name will change colour (3 hours in-game time for it to go back to normal). If you kill 2 people, you will be labeled a murderer (6 hours in-game to go back to normal). If you kill 3 people, you will be a phonomaniac (9 hours + 3hours per additional kill to get back to normal), and you won't be able to buy items from NPCs. For each stage of murderer, your chance of dropping an item when you die increases.
Also, once you are labeled a phonomaniac, any other player can attack YOU unprovoked, and not be penalized. In fact, if you kill murderers, you will gain hero status (name in blue, 3 hours till normal). Hero status gives you slightly better drops, and decreases the chances of dropping an item when you die (practically 0).
Be warned, though. A murderer is probably very powerful (or a hacker, which equates to the same thing), so don't mess with one unless you're sure you can beat him (don't even think about it unless you're level 100+ or you're sure the murderers is weak).
